Why Join?

Two years ago I was looking for a way to enjoy a sport with both of my children simultaneously, I knew that I wanted to take karate with the kids. My first conversation with Sensei Pam convinced me we were going to do a trial class and see how things went. After our first night in class, it became obvious that not only had we found our dojo, but we had found a new family.
— Kevin Robison

Sorrells Karate Dojo is a place to call home; we strive to enrich the lives of each of our students while giving them the structure and guidance needed to overcome life's various obstacles.  At Sorrells Karate Dojo we teach a very structured traditional martial arts because we believe that training should encompass body, mind and spirit. Our Karate is an Art, Sport and Science.  At Sorrells Karate we focus on the mental, psychological and physical development of our students through building relationships and teaching by example. We consistently encourage excellence in character, manners and execution of the art. We cover several aspects of traditional martial arts including Kata and Kobudo, as well as transcending into sport Karate with our nationally recognized competition team.

Shotokan

The ultimate aim of Karate lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of the character of the participant
— Gichin Funakoshi

Shotokan is a style of karate, developed by Gichin Funakoshi and his son Gigo (Yoshitaka) Funakoshi. Gichin was born in Okinawa and is widely credited with popularizing "karate do" through a series of public demonstrations, and by promoting the development of university karate clubs, including those at Keio, Waseda, Hitotsubashi (Shodai), Takushoku, Chuo, Gakushuin, and Hosei.

Shotokan is a dynamic martial art that emcompasses anaerobic, powerful techniques as while developing one's speed. Initially strength and power are demonstrated instead of slower, more flowing motions. Those who progress to brown and black belt level develop a much more fluid style that incorporates grappling and some aikido-like techniques, which can be found in the black belt kata. Kumite (fighting) techniques are practiced in the kihon and kata and developed from basic to advanced levels with an opponent.

Shuri-ryu

Karate is my life and the hand is my sword
— Robert Tias

Shuri-ryu is an eclectic Martial Arts system developed by Robert Trias. The study of Shuri-ryu Karatedo is a lifetime activity. It includes mental discipline, emotional control and spiritual development. Shuri-ryu develops the whole person. Shuri-ryu is a combative art, strategy, theories of combat, vital points, pressure points, the theory and application of throwing, joint locks, sweeps, grappling and weapons are all part of the lifetime study of Shuri-ryu.

The values learned in Martial Arts enable the Karateka to do the right thing at the right time. These values are the basis for the development of character. This is Karatedo:

"Karate knowledge is acquired through good health, spiritual and mental perfection, and the enjoyment of life to its fullest with devotion to God, country, and fellow men. Karate Knowledge shall never be given on the basis of physical performance alone, no matter how excellent the ability. Karate knowledge shall only be given to those whose moral character can thoroughly be trusted."
